It will never have that captive audience that was forced to watch Don Messer's Jubilee or Singalong Jubilee(same performers, different name), don't get me wrong, Don was a talented man and was responsible for letting Stompin' Tom Connors loose on unsuspecting Canadians, but I doubt that there would be a national outcry if one of the shows running on CBC today were to be cancelled, such as there was when Donny boy had the plug pulled on him back then.
The cancellation of the show by the public broadcaster in 1969 caused a nationwide protest, including the raising of questions by Members of Parliament in the House of Commons. The last CBC broadcast was on June 20, 1969.
The real question is, do Canadians have the same passion that they once had for the CBC, is the CBC even relevant in its current form? I think we all know the answer to that, the CBC would probably do well if they were to scale it way back, clean out the arrogance in the front office, cut the government funding way back, which would clean out all of the deadwood, as in, the extremely unfunny "comedy" shows and the walking alphabets talk show, and include private funding ala PBS.
Canadians don't hate you CBC, they just hate what you have become.
The days of wine and roses are over, time for the beer and popcorn.

"Can the CBC be fixed?"
Who cares? I don't watch it except for hockey, but if there is a choice, I will watch the other networks as their commentary is better. The CBC is a waste.
It will be difficult to fix what already has been infested that place without a through cleanning from top to down.
Let CBC demolish itself which it is doing rapidly.
Exactly, who cares.
But I would like to help it along to the scrap heap by castrating it financially because it is my/your capital that it believes it is not obligated to account for.
As it is Halloween, we should be driving a stake into its heart and kill the beast or cut the head of the snake off, once and for all.
Fix it? You have to be kidding me.
This entity is not worth fixing.
I think that is the general concensus here, it is too far gone to fix.
Most people look at the CBC as a waste of time and money that only other people watch.
Unfortunately for the CBC, not enough of the "other" people are watching it anymore.

I think the CBC would be brilliant with a budget of about 250-300 million.
The CBC should not be allowed to carry ads at all.
It shouldn't be allowed to broadcast (and outbid competitors for) hockey, the olympics, football, etc.
The CBC shouldn't have a news department.
The CBC shouldn't be allowed to broadcast American sitcoms, gameshows, Hollywood movies, or anything other than the occasional credible US documentary (ie, Frontline or Nova, NOT Michael Moore).
The CBC should provide first rate children's programming, documentaries about Canada, arts programming from Canada, and if they must get into sports, let it be college football, minor league hockey, etc.
University students trying to learn the craft of film making should be able get their final product on the CBC if it is good enough & should be encouraged to do so. But they won't get paid.
Basically the model for the CBC should be a slightly larger version of BC's Knowledge Network or Ontario's TVO.
I like it James, problem is, as others have said, you would basically have to tear down the existing model, remove everyone who is in any position of authority, as well as all on air talent and start from scratch.
I do like your model of what the CBC should look like though.

"Canadians don't hate you CBC, they just hate what you have become."
Couldn't have said it better m'self.
CBC CAN be "fixed",the same as any failing business can be fixed.
The owners, US,represented by "De Gubmint", simply have to find a top-notch CEO,the "Lee Iacocca" of the broadcasting industry, and give him a mandate to turn the Network into a money maker. With NO political interference!
It would be big fun to watch the firings of second and third raters like Mercer and the THH22 Mins gang, plus all the other little talents in a little market that exist to suck up our dollars at the boondoggle called CBC.
Back in 1962,my hometown finally received a TV signal, and we had one of the first TV's in town.
There was a regular crowd of about 15 people who would congregate in our living room to watch Don Messer's Jubilee, including many fine Metis fiddlers.
They wanted to see the "Master" they'd heard on Radio for so many years.
And I'll take "Don" over "Little Mosque" or the "Mercer Report" any day!

Agreed.

I doubt very much if it can be fixed; the CBC mindset amongst executives and producers has had 75 years to mature. Both Robert Fulford and George Jonas have written of the CBC viewpoint, never stated, but an all prevailing view of the world, shared by the employees.
The reason producers and commentators can claim unbiased reporting is that they never meet or hear a different viewpoint.
One example. Yesterday BC Blue mentioned that since Adrian MacNair's devastating putdown of Kady O'Malley on P&P show, MacNair has never again been invited onto CBC. This occurred when he pointed out that 2 weeks after climate gate had broken, O'Malley had totally ignored the story.
One might ask, why with about 6 networks to broadcast on, CBC even hires people like O'Malley, to blog their opinions.
The climate change story was broken and exposed by bloggers like Kate McMillan, on their own time and expense. They should not have to pay the salaries of people like O'Malley.
Another thing that bugs me is that we don't hear the Prime Minister's statements or news conferences in their entirety when he is on the world stage. CBC pays for Terry Mileski (sp) to attend these functions and give his opinions. Now that's sweet!! We can expect non-biased coverage for him, n'est-ce pas? (NOT). I don't care who the PM is, we should be able to hear what he has to say on the world stage instead of a reporter's opinion of what he says. What we hear even on the CBC's news channel is possibly two or three sentences of the PMs speeches or news conferences. Let us hear the whole thing, and we'll make up our own minds.
CBC has become a very dangerous place their ideal people are not the ordinary canadians but those of radicals, taliban criminals and others in fact, I would not be surprise that CBC is controlled by these people. What you see are either scared individuals who are being told what to say and do. You can smell the evil crawling in that place.
The news is just a front because even the news don't make sense at all.
Obama is in a mess yet the media spend time looking for some damaging on the conservatives.
Once again, CBC is very dangerous place all covered up with phoney news and manipulation.
Interesting question, and lots of great comments. I think James and dmorris make some good points. The CBC has a vault full of films and news coverage that dates back decades. There are so many amazing Canadians, with amazing stories to be told, unfortunately, the disease of Trudeau still infects the CBC. There's the nit wit Pearson and the warped Trudeau era view of Canada, and then there's the real Canada. If Canada's story could be told without the interference of denial, and distortions of the Trudeau/Pearson revisionist history then the CBC could be something relevant. The CBC could be something worthwhile, but needs to be hosed out and cleansed of those who are destroying it and using it as their own "Ministry of Truth" and revisionist history network. Canada was around long before Pearson and Trudeau re-imagined it in their own image.
CBC's future? Probably like the BBC news service except a Canadian version. (real conservative)
